Is it possible for a fighting game to have a coherent story?

"My name is Inigo Montoya you killed my father...prepare to die."

...meanwhile in Japan...

Game Writer - "I have a brilliant idea for a new original back story!"

Basically tho' this is only because people mainly think of street fighter and its' become a meme :p

An episodic story mode where you play as various characters in turn would most certainly work for SC. I'm not sure thats the best option, but it would certainly work. All you have to do is decide 'what happens', and then fit all the characters into the plot. ... As I think of it that's one of the major problems, namely that its not clear at the end of these games 'what actually happened' from the various arcade modes. You usually don't know until the next iteration. SC has the advantage over some in that at least they make that clear.
 
Alot of people bash Capcom for Street Fighter's story but they actually attempt to make sense of it and even make it enjoyable with Street Fighter's multi media iterations. I enjoy the Udon comics. I watched all the movies. I watched most of the animes. Yeah, playing the arcade mode of SF:A 1-3 and SF 1-4 isn't going to give you the best picture of the story, but alot of the other mediums clarify Street Fighter's story.

As a whole, I find it entertaining. And you can't say Street Fighter's story isn't original. Why? But SF is THE OG of fighting games. So, essentially, every FG after SF was stealing Capcom's swag.

I used to think KOF had an interesting story but it got a little repetitive after the Orochi saga.

Think Bloody Roar had the weakest plot and that's saying alot since it's in the fighting game genre.

But yeah, you play fighting games to punch someone's face in. You play text adventures read about some one else punching some other guys face in. :\
