Interview Time! Episode 6: 8WayRunners

1. How did you start your SC journey?
My first Soul Calibur game was SC2 for PS2. I played casually until SC5; I was part of the competitive fighting game scene then, and eagerly awaited SC5's release as I found that 2d fighters were simply not clicking with me.
2. When and why did you join 8WayRun.com?
I joined after the release of SC5 in order to participate in the community, and learn with people.
3. Are you following the competitive community, or maybe you prefer being a casual player?
Both, at the same time, mutually inclusive.
4. Do you watch SC tournament streams?
Yes, and I also watch and occasionally participate in the 24/7 stream as well.
5. Is SC the only fighting game you are interested in?
My first competitive fighting game was BlazBlue. I branched out from there to Guilty Gear, Street Fighter, and Marvel. Street Fighter didn't click with me, and Marvel was just way too broken for me to like. I am presently interested in Skullgirls, Virtua Fighter 5, and Tekken Tag 2. (In addition to SC5, of course.)
6. What controller do you mind yourself more comfortable with?
I have a dual-modded six-button pad that I bought from Gummowned at this year's PowerUp. I love it; it was well worth the purchase.
7. Are you satisfied with SCV?
Nearly. I feel like the game is well-balanced, but the outliers, both in terms of the stupidly good and cringingly bad, really hurt the game. I also want a better long skirt for my character, damnit.
8. Are you looking forward more to another installment or maybe an enhanced version of SCV?
Absolutely yes. I'd be pumped for either.
9. Who would you like to see interviewed in the upcoming episoded of the Interview Time! ?
I think Kalas would be a good choice.

1. Playing in the arcade
2. About a week after its creation... Jaxel told me to join and the site worked, so I did
3. I compete and I always will even if I turn into a pot moster... Like SC4
4. I am SCV tournament streams
5. Nope, I'm into all sorts of other eSports games... But I guess VF is the only other fighter I'm really interested in
6. TE until death do us part
7. Yes, I still want a proper patch and hopefully a new iteration of the game next year.
8. Hell yes!
9. ME MOTHERFUCKER! Other interesting heads would be guys like aris, RTD, KrayzieCD, Xeph, KDZ, IdleMind, Heaton... Probably plenty more but I'm blanking for the time being.

I saw a magazine segment on Soul Calibur II many years ago. Back then I was a Tekken addict who didn't have any interest in other fighting games. When I saw that Heihachi, a Tekken character, was playable in this game I thought I'd give it a try. However, I forgot about the game soon after and It wasn't until a couple of years later that I remembered it and asked for it for Christmas. I didn't realise that SCIII was out so my parents decided to get me that game instead since it was newer. At first I was disappointed that I couldn't beat up fools with Heihachi but I soon forgot about that and fell in love with the game.

I joined 8WR soon after I got SCIV. I didn't get my PS3 until half a year after the game came out so I fell a bit behind. Many people online mentioned the name and I became interested. I joined in May or June 2009 and have loved it ever since.

I want to be competitive but I fear that since my main character is banned in some parts of Europe, I won't be able to compete. I'm not saying I'm good enough to play with the best in Europe but I'm worried that soon all European countires will ban Dampierre and I don't want to find another main. I'll follow the competitive scene regardless since I find the game to be a ton of fun.

I watch all Major tournaments of SCV and a couple of Local ones here and there. While it may not have the "hype" of some games like UMVC3 I still find it great to watch.

Like I've said, Tekken was my main game throughout my childhood. I have all Tekken games except some handheld ports. Despite my love for the series, I absoultely hate Tekken 6. The mechanics in that game are just far too dumb and movesets are growing out of control. I will be getting TTT2 simply because I'm willing to give the series another try. I won't take the game seriously though. Other than Tekken, I also enjoy watching other 3D fighters like VF5 . I'll be trying out DoA5 this year and we'll see how it goes. I like watching 2D fighters but I hate playing them.

The Playstaion pad is the only thing I've ever used to play fughting games. It just works so well. All the buttons are easy to reach and aren't scattered around. I doubt I'll ever get an arcade stick.

I'm satisfied with most aspects of SCV. Despite it's flaws, the netcode is brilliant for an online warrior such as myself. The pace being faster felt weird at first but I'm used to it and I actually like it more now. Obviously the balance isn't perfect but it's pretty damn good by SoulCalibur's standards. My main gripe is the terrible singleplayer that the game offers. The story is short, doesn't include most of the cast and gives off a creepy sense of incest between the two main characters. Legenday souls has stupid AI that doesn't help improve a player in the slightest and all the modes that were common in the past like Team Battle are absent. But really, I didn't buy the game for the single player. I bought it for the multiplayer and thankfully that part of the game is very good.

I know an update would cause a shitstorm given how many times Capcom has done it but I would personally love it. If they added in old charcters like Zas or even just their styles, I'd be happy. A fleshed out singleplayer and a slight rebalancing could do the world of good to the game and the community.

I don't mind who you interview next. It's always an interesting read. :)

1. Soul Calibur on the Dreamcast, an uncle brought it over during a barbecue and everyone played it, I picked Nightmare because at the time, my favorite video game character was Cloud from Final Fantasy 7 and Nightmare also had a big sword.
2. Went looking for a community to play against in SoulCalibur IV, found out V was coming out soon, been here ever since.
3. I follow the competitive community, and hope someday to be good enough to fight against Keev in a tournament. High hopes, I guess, but he has inspired me to take my Nightmare play to the next level. And the next. And the next lol.
4. I'll watch streams after they are done and fully recorded.
5. Yes, though I enjoy Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 when playing with friends. Could never take that game serious though, after Ultimate MvC3.
6. I prefer the PS3 controller, I find that the Xbox dpad causes me to miss many inputs and I have little experience with a fightstick.
7. I love SoulCalibur V, but I wish it had more story.
8. I would prefer a large update to SoulCalibur V, extending the story to make most, if not all, characters story relevant, and of course adding in Zasalamel, Talim, and Yun-Seong's fighting styles.
9. Keev. No other player has inspired me to work hard in SCV as much as he has.

1. How did you start your SC journey?

By playing 'Soul Edge' in a local arcade. At the time I was more interested in playing 'Tekken 2' and 'Street Fighter Alpha 2' in the arcades and 'Virtua Fighter 2' at home. That changed with 'Soulcalibur', however, and that quickly became my go-to fighting game. SCII I bought, but the GameCube controller proved an insurmountable barrier. III & IV I skipped, and came back on board with V...

2. When and why did you join 8WayRun.com?

About two months ago, when I was thinking of buying SCV. I wanted to get some advice, read up on some stuff, and catch the flavour of the SC community...

3. Are you following the competitive community, or maybe you prefer being a casual player?

I do follow the competitive side of things. Not entered a SC tournament yet, but next time I'm near one I'll be pot-monstering in it...

4. Do you watch SC tournament streams?

I do, yes - but usually only the majors...

5. Is SC the only fighting game you are interested in?

No. I dabble in 'Skullgirls' and 'The King Of Fighters XIII', but the game I play the most (at least pre-SCV) is 'Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition: Ver 2012'...

6. What controller do you mind yourself more comfortable with?

Arcade stick. Haven't been able to use a pad for a fighting game since the demise of the Saturn. Genuinely can't understand how anyone can use the awful PS3 pad...

7. Are you satisfied with SCV?

Pretty much. It's too offensive for my tastes, and I've never got on with Guard Break mechanisms (how can you possibly block 'too much'? How can anyone say that blocking has less value than attacking? I'm with Justin Wong - 'Block more. I don't care how much you block already, block more.'), but it's fun. Somewhere between IV and V, in terms of defense-offense balance, would be my ideal, but hey.

The only fear I have is that the game is already dying. There doesn't seem to be many people playing it online, and offline there is even less (at least where I am). There's only one other player in my local scene, for instance...

8. Are you looking forward more to another installment or maybe an enhanced version of SCV?

I think an enhanced 'Super Soul Calibur V' might be the best we can hope for - at least this generation of consoles...

9. Who would you like to see interviewed in the upcoming episoded of the Interview Time! ?

I'd like to see Floe interviewed and asked about the differences between games, styles, 2D & 3D, and communities...
