Igniting the spark

I posted in the original fighter thread and it got me thinking... I know we all have to have gathered some awesome stories in our fighter histories. Primarily, I want to know when your "spark" ignited, if I may be granted a Magic planeswalker analogy. By this, I mean when did you become good to the point that you knew it and everybody around you knew it?

Mine occurred after I had spent a continuous year playing Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo, studying it intensely, but unfortunately unable to play against anybody. Before that, I was a total scrub just mashing buttons. After that, I would have concrete plans about how I'm going to go after my opponent, though I still continue to evolve now.
This truly became evident on several outings with the Boy Scouts. It started with Killer Instinct 2 at the arcade of a miniature golf place. I had never played it before, but my friend was boasting about how killer he was at it. I figured I had some time to kill, so it was worth 50 cents to see what this game was like and how good he was. Well, I played such a good prediction game that I was able to just use basically 1 move at precisely opportune moments, as I blocked every one of the combos he brought to me. This astounded him, so he plunked down like 5 more credits into the game. He couldn't get me, and everyone in my troop had previously considered him the fighting master. I now had groupies. :p Later we tried this in Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 at a different location, but this time I did have experience at it. Still nowhere near real competition, but enough to blow away all competitors.
That's basically all I was for a long time. I was all about predicting my opponent and having few moves of my own. It wouldn't win me any national-level tournaments, of course, but I still feel that's where my true spark of skill was ignited.
