If I had $1 for every time God bailed me out..

Evolution happens to make species better at survival. In short, it's based on their previous weaknesses.

Evolution happens because dead things are less likely to reproduce. There is no mechanism that says that species ought to survive, or an unwritten force that is making the strong dominate. The strong just dominate because they are the ones that are around in greater numbers in the next recombination of genes.

Well its kind of depressing when a 16 year old knows more about the follies and achievments of religion than others sometimes do. I admire those who have a faith, but at the same time, it seems to me that about 80% or something around there only know about the good aspects of their religions and remain oblivious the the horrors and opprobrious actions that their religion had taken in the past. I don't choose to believe or become a non-believer based on narrow-minded views of what someone tells me. I choose to take in all information that everyone tells me and interpret it as I believe it should be interpreted.

The only other aspect about religion that I do not admire other than the ones stated in my previous post is the fact that generally, once someone becomes a part of a religion or is born in a religious society, they choose to close their minds to the other truths of the planet and choose to only listen to what their instructors will them to believe. That is one of the most annoying aspects of a religion that I cannot stand. Do not take it as I am saying everyone is like this, for I know that no one is always categorized in one specific group. But, from past expiriences, I see that most other persons whom I have met choose to be ignorant to certain facts if they are part of a religion that either A.) Frowns upon said truths or B.) Is what caused said truths and does not wish it to seem as a bad thing in the minds of their followers.

"Science develops best when its concepts and conclusions are integrated into the broader human culture and its concerns for ultimate meaning and value. Scientists cannot, therefore, hold themselves entirely aloof from the sorts of issues dealt with by philosophers and theologians. By devoting to these issues something of the energy and care they give to their research in science, they can help others realize more fully the human potentialities of their discoveries. They can also come to appreciate for themselves that these discoveries cannot be a genuine substitute for knowledge of the truly ultimate. Science can purify religion from error and superstition; religion can purify science from idolatry and false absolutes. Each can draw the other into a wider world, a world in which both can flourish."

- Pope John Paul II.

Anyone agree with this statement?

I must say that I find this to be a well thought quote. It seems rather ingenious to word it the way he did, and it saddens me that I have not come across it before.

"Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind. "

Albert Einstein, "Science, Philosophy and Religion: a Symposium", 1941

Take everything in moderation people. There is not reason that God and science cannot coexist. But blinding yourself to one or the other is just foolery.

Another good one from him:

"Whoever undertakes to set himself up as a judge of Truth and Knowledge is shipwrecked by the laughter of the Gods."

Albert Einstein

"A man's ethical behavior should be based effectually on sympathy, education, and social ties; no religious basis is necessary. Man would indeed be in a poor way if he had to be restrained by fear of punishment and hope of reward after death." - Albert Einstein

"It was, of course, a lie what you read about my religious convictions, a lie which is being systematically repeated. I do not believe in a personal God and I have never denied this but have expressed it clearly." -Albert Einstein

Einstein's quotes are often taken out of context sadly -- we're also finding a couple flaws in his theories of relativity, even though our understanding thrives on his findings. That's the beauty of science, it corrects itself if evidence is found. Religion instead already 'knows' the truth and therefore contradicts any explanation or fact that doesn't adhere to bronze-age scripture. Just to imagine how gullible the population is, just look at Scientology or Mormons and what they believe. It's just human nature to want something spiritual.

I'm also in firm belief that 'religious science' is an oxymoron. The two simply don't mix, especially when one causes people to commit delusional actions.
