That's awesome! It's always good to see a casual player wanting to take the plunge into competitive gaming. It's very rewarding, even if you don't win. The friendships you can make can last you a lifetime, the experiences can as well. You're in a prime area for tournaments to happen regularly. New Jersey houses the biggest offline community in the Uniter States. I don't think they are having regular tournaments as of now, but you can bet that once SC5 comes out, they will be one of the first to start having them.
In any event, which part of Jersey are you in? I've noticed there are threads for Central and North Jersey. You should check out the Regional Matchamaking: Atlantic and post up in your area and see if there is anything going on.
