Hiya!

Hi DarthWOBBUFFET. Welcome to the forums. I am one of the moderators for this section so if you have any problems or questions, my door is open for you to speak freely.

So you're looking for a main. My suggestion would be to scroll through the characters and find one that you like more than the rest. The most important part about reaching that high level tournament play is to stick with one character and learn how to fight with them against the entire cast of characters. They each have their own uniqueness on handling the competition so figuring that out on your own can give you an enormous ammount of experience.

You'd be wise to read through the few sticky threads in this section to get a good feel of how you're supposed to play at high level: SC Tactics

Where are you from? There might be a scene near you where you are.

Thank Enkindu for the Welcome and awesome info. i am from Maryland. i used to be the guy who was just picking random characters, so i'm guessing that's why i wasn't really getting better. so this info you have given me really helps with any fighting game. Today i started to pick up Setsuka.

Lol, leave it to a SF player to pick a character with execution demands XD.
Welcome to the boards and good luck with Setsuka, bro! =)

Yeah, if you watch any tournaments, you'll notice that top players always stick with one character. This is mostly because at that level of play, there is alot of pressure. You need to have a character that you're comfortable with in these high pressure situations to play at your best. Playing lots of opponents generally makes these situations have less pressure on you because you'd have figured out how to deal with particular situations that your opponent puts you in with this character. That type of experience comes with trial and error and that experience generally doesn't transfer over well to another chracter. This is why it's important to pick one character, and stick with them through thick and thin.

You're quite lucky to live in MD. I know that town is typically for capcom fighters, but there are some SC people there as well. Check out this thread there and introduce yourself: http://8wayrun.com/threads/md-va-wv-sure-is-dead-here.5317/page-63

Anywho, best of luck to you on reaching that level. Hopefully we'll one day meet at a tournament and you can show me what you've learned.
