Why? Chevy has fuel efficient models too. About the looks though, I can't say. To me all compacts and sub-compacts look ugly as hell. =(
I want a safe car, and for what i've heard, the Chevy is a great economic car, but in that case I would pick a Nissan Tsuru which is farely better and safer than the Chevy and it's even cheaper.
And i'm not really into american cars (Ford/Chevrolet/Chrysler/etc)

A safe car? I don't get it... Oh well, I tend to stick to driving steel boxes that don't dent because you leaned on them. I've never worried about vehicle crash safety, I just pick what's fun. That Nissan might be cheaper in Mexico. In America imports are usually more expensive to maintain than an American vehicle.

The following are all my opinion. *waits for HRD to crush my opinion*
Buying price: Europe>America>Japan
Maintenance price: Europe>Japan>America
Performance price ratio: Japan (only because of Subaru)>America(V6 Mustangs)>Europe

I dont have the strength to tell whats wrong with just about everything you just said. I gotta a nap before i hit this one.

In Mexico Nissan is very cheap, not sure why, maybe because many cars from the Nissan are made in Mexico, also Chevrolet is one of the cheapest trademarks but Nissan is maybe the cheapest one.
Till august Chevrolet Aveo is the best selling car of the year in mexico, followed by the Tsuru and the VW Jetta, so those trademarks are not that expensive

IMO that would be like this:
Buying Price: America>Europe>Japan
Maintenance: Japan>America>Europe (a trouble with the Seat Ibiza from Spain, but i've heard that the seat is made from the Jetta but it's weight is way lower)
Performance price ratio: Japan>Europe (because of Volkswagen/Seat/Pontiac)>America>Europe again (Peugeot etc)
