Hello everyone

Phragonist

[06] Combatant
So, it looks like this is the only legit SoulCalibur forum on the internet. Anyway, I've been browsing and I find myself wanting to reply so I made an account. I've been playing the series since Soul Edge... not super competitively though, mainly against my brother and a few friends. This is the first game in the series that I have played online. I guess I might be dangerously close to having what I'm reading is called 'big fish in a small pond' syndrome. I could beat my usual competition most of the time, before the internet. In "The Calibur Primer" it says part of this syndrom is "The big-fish-small-pond scrub’s ego is so insanely bloated that any form of losing can’t be understood and must be compensated with reasons why. These reasons have nothing to do with the scrub’s skill or ability to adapt, of course." ... I dont have that part of it. My ego is not bloated, and I don't make excuses why I lose having nothing to do with my skill. Anway... I'm still getting used to not being able to guard impact with back+block or parry with forward+block. I haven't got the hang of Just Guard yet, then again I haven't really tried to get the hang of it either. The meter system is intuitive enough.. I haven't spent much/any time in the practice mode learning all the movesets of characters yet. I played through the story, and then I've been playing quickmatch getting titles with EdgeMaster, so I can learn a bit of everyone, and find out who I like enough to actually spend time learning them. I've only played ~20 ranked matches online, most of them with Siegfried. I won half I lost half. I don't want to play too many online matches without learning someones entire moveset as that will just set me up for losses. In the past I mained Astaroth, and Raphael was my go to if Astaroth wasn't working. Astaroth doesnt look like he's changed too terribly much but I'm not sure how I feel about raphael now... So far movesets that I've liked from playing EdgeMaster are cervantes, mitsurugi, siegfried, tira, and nightmare. Hilde and Ivy look like I have potential to like them once I learn them, but not great at them yet, not just naturally flowing like some of the previously mentioned. I used to be good with Kilik (who wasnt?) but I havent got the hang of xiba yet.. he's got the same weapon but he plays so much differently... Mitsurugi seems good, but I'm afraid to main him for fear of being labeled as playing a noob character. Also (lol) I seem to always win rounds that I get dampierres moveset from Edgemaster? somehow? He seems so bad... but I do so well with him.... what? Maybe it's just how I play with him. Super poke-ey, hit and run...idk... Anyway... Maybe I'll just main EdgeMaster.

Damn, wall of text. Thanks if you actually read all that, and double thanks if you actually reply. I listed my PSN, and I'd love to play with and learn from any of you guys. I know I have a lot to learn.

Sounds like you have the right attitude for starting off, welcome to the loony bin sir!

Although Edge Master is perfectly fine, you may find yourself learning more by playing the actual characters themselves(or your own custom characters using their styles) and really trying to learn them.

Probably Maybe I'm wrong, but I get the impression that you like to adapt to things you can't control. Maybe you should try truly learning Tira and/or Dampierre. Tira's persona shifts greatly affect the movelist you have available immediately and allow for crazy combos when you get multiple in a row. Dampierre has a tendency to fall flat on his ass, something that newer players fall for very much but experienced players tear apart---then when he doesn't, he can do some insane combos that would be broken if he didn't have a chance of falling on his ass in the middle of them.

For now, worry about finding the shoe that fits. Once you find your main, visit any Soul Arenas of your choosing. While maining EdgeMaster is fun, it'll suck because the jack of all trades will take awhile to master. Hence why he's called EdgeMaster haha.

Aside from that, welcome and have fun.
