This isn't a question of romanticizing anything or of talking up Vints (Christ, I'm mostly just joking about him needing to get laid). What he said, though, about beating his head against the wall and taking loss after loss before something clicked struck me as both an important habit and an excellent starting point for talking about maintaining a proper attitude.

Then again, by all means, throw the baby out with the bathwater, but that seems overly sensitive to me. Is this the dawn of Feelings Calibur? Tune in next week to find out!

This is interesting. We are studying the process of learning in my psychology class and the things you mentioned about tactics reminded me of positive and negative reinforcement. The whole speech reminded me of active learning, skill learning and a little bit of learned helplessness.

Totally. The idea isn't to pick on you or use the dreaded C-word. If you didn't represent a particularly big challenge to the guy then he wouldn't have had to take 15 straight ass-whuppings to figure out a way to get narrow victories.

Games are a really rich place to look for examples of learning. Think about it--the best games teach themselves to a degree. Moreover, developing and maintaining expert level performance in a game (something about which I write a fair amount academically) is an incredibly complex undertaking. If you're interested in exploring some of the ideas further, I'd recommend picking up some books by James Paul Gee, in particular What Video Games Have to Teach Us About Learning and Literacy and maybe some of his newer articles. Google him--he has PDFs of a lot of shorter pieces on his site, and it's a good starting point.
