Judging from the snippets of interviews that I read, Sakurai's problem with competitive Smash was that it ran counter to his desire to make everybody happy by allowing them all to have "fun," regardless of skill level. Stupid scrub mentality, in other words.

It's really hard to design directly for fun and not competition (or competitive attitudes) when the game inherently is about people against each other, with no buffer of other content to shield the ego, with a clear winner and loser. This is like design principle 101.

Fun is perfectly reasonable to aspire to as the sole goal of a design, but mixing it with these elements is just oil and water... so I guess yeah it speaks to your point. This is what happens when the scrub mentality gets behind game design.
 
The thing is that not all of us can participate in a tournament. Not everyone has the economic capability of just taking a week off and traveling to a far city for solely entertainment reasons. Some might also have a very tight schedule. I myself will love to participate in the competitive FL community when I get to college, since my parents are definitely not paying such a long trip for me to play a game. I just hope people still play SC by then.

Notice the guy in the new balances to the left? He's probably getting an eye full of hair balls and he seems pretty happy about it. LOL
