I have heard this. I think someone even tested this to some success. You're basically reacting to the actual startup animation of the throw. Not to the animation of the throw connecting since that's the same between all throws. Obviously easier with some characters than others.
 
Well since we are going down memory lane, I liked how Soul Calibur 2 gave options to me rather than restrict options like what the sequels has done.

If you couldn't keep up with the speed and safety present in the game system, it is your problem, not the game's shortcoming.

Anyone can choose to play "5-moves" in Soul Calibur 2 and if it works for them at competitions level, good for them BUT that was not the only way you could play the various characters to win.

I would say the game had something for everyone, with many treasures to discover for each character, and that was what made it so successful. So give credit where credit is due.
 
Throws stop being as scary in a game with option select gi/throw break. (throws are GIable in SC2.) Which SC5 eloquently solved with GI needing meter

Yeah, lows are also useless cuz i can just option select them both with 3G.

That only happens in tekken. In that game the person throwing leads with one hand that will indicate the break. In SC it's the same animation for all normal grabs, some command grabs will have different animations like Voldo BT 66A+G. Outside if specific instances like that, grabs in SC all use similar animations for standard grabs.

There are certain grabs where the break window is still active after the startup animation has begun, Ivy's B+G being one example. It's not like this for all grabs, however.
