The mainstream media has always been about 10-20 years behind what the industry is actually doing. Unless a game pops into broader pop culture, they have no reason to pay attention to gaming whatsoever. So, in their minds, gaming consists of Pac Man, Doom, Mortal Kombat, and maybe GTA.
So naturally it's going to seem a stunted medium to those incurious types. If you're perpetually being wheeled out to explain to these types the current state of gaming only to be greeted with, "I played Pac Man. Bleep Bleep!" You'll eventually start to wonder if your beat is worth anything.
Further, trying to impress the mainstream media with something like Ico is totally impossible. There's nothing for the mainstream media to latch onto there unless it's being made into a 300 million dollar summer blockbuster or something. They'll only notice the industry when it does something controversial.
