On topic, the game *IS* linear but it ain't a bad game. Not as FF8 or 10 but let me say something.

FF1 = Linear
FF2 = Not linear
FF4 = Not linear
FF5 = Not linear
FF6 = Not linear
FF7 = Linear
FF8 = Not linear
FF9 = Linear
FF10 = Linear
FF10-2 = Not linear
FF12 = Not linear
FF13 = Linear

It changes from game to game. Not a big deal. The absence of towns is more annoying and Vanille's cheapness but other than that, the game is ok.
 
Apparently once you've finished the game you can load it back up and carry on with missions you never finished and pretty much just roam around on pulse
