Fighter Genres

This classification seems to be based mostly on the POV and control scheme, in which case Smash would probably just fit into the 2d category. But yeah, not a traditional fighting game.

I can see why people would put smash in its own catagory but I would also put it in classic 2D. You still play on the basic 2D plane with the only difference being varying heights of the floor.

He means that they die when they go off the edge of the screen. No where did he say specifically spiking.

Yessir.

Anyway, the thing about Smash is that most of the "Classic 2D" fighters are all VERY, VERY similar if you think about it: life meters, ground-based fighting, few ring-outs, etc.

Smash Bros takes those things and goes in the opposite direction; life meters are NOT standard, all of the kills are from ring outs, and air-based fighting.

But if we're just talking POV, Smash would be a 2D Fighter. :-\

I guess Smash would be a 2.5D Platform fighter since it uses 3D characters fighting on multiple 2D planes. I wouldn't categorize it as solely a 2D fighter because of how unique it is.

How about Viewtiful Joe and the newer Ninja Gaiden games as one player campaign style fighting game? Not as simple as an action game, but full in depth moves.
