I'm starting to notice that things just ain't like they used to be anymore, so I'm hoping to get the classes of fighters established somewhat. I know there's fighters I've never played before, so if you know of something unusual I haven't brought up, please contribute.
Classic 2D
Street Fighter brought fighters into the mainstream culture, even though we already had at least 1 fighter game previously (Atari boxing, anyone?). I didn't want to call it a "side-scroller," in case there's a fighter game of this nature which just gives you a set box to play in.
3D side view
This would be where Soul Calibur fits in, along with Tekken, Dead or Alive, Virtua Fighter, etc. We still have essentially a 2D view to the sides, but players are able to navigate through all dimensions of the game.
3D POV
This genre branches from the side view, in that the game plays with a first or third-person view of your character. A 1-player example would be the Punch-Out series, but multiplayer options include the Budokai Tenkaichi series and Wii Boxing.
Shared World
I can't really think of a better name, honestly. This is where I would put Castlevania Judgment, and I hear Power Stone plays this way, too. This genre requires it to be 3D, and acts more like a typical adventure game as far as controls go.
Smash Bros
Really, I just can't put this game into any kind of genre, since it basically made its own. The closest comparison is classic 2D, but anyone who plays it knows that it is drastically different from the classic style. If anybody can name this kind of game so that we know how to label potential imitators, that'd be helpful.
EDIT: Sorry, I forgot there was a separate forum for video games. Please move when you can.
