FF7 Materia system...broken?

And to think, most of us have had to listen to some nerd try to tell us that RPGs take more skill than fighters, lol. No game that has "do this and you win" takes much skill at all.

You sound pretty triumphant considering that final fantasy seven isn't every rpg ever made. No, no game that has "Do this and you win" takes much skill but I can think of a fair share of broken fighters that could be attested to as well. So can you I'm sure.

The problem of comparisons of course is that in most fighters your ultimate goal is human competition, that's not going to happen in most RPG's. No matter how unfair a situation you may find yourself ultimately you will overcome an AI. In RPG's where you can engage in player vs player match ups like say a tactics game, that's really a toss up now isn't it? I'm not going to say they're right. But I think you're a little too cheerful. I could say "Hey look at cinder and some of the things he can do" and then using Killer instinct say fighters don't take skill, but I know a bit more about fighters and I'm a bit more thoughtful than that.

RPG's have never really taken skill. (Unless grinding and resource management are skills.) They're more something to play for the story.

Dunno what that damn rotting floor in Growlancer 2 counts for tho.

Skill is a funny, relative thing. What are you skilled at? Techniques? Strategy? You can have a great strategy, poor technique, and still win amongst hordes of people. You can also have the complete opposite. Lousy strategy, great technical ability, but you lose often.

I wish this were in the tactics forum. We play too much, think too little. And by we I mean you guys. I'm just saying hello.

I stopped playing FFVII about a quarter of the way through. It bored me, and after learning the whole story, I'm glad I dropped it. There are plenty of RPGs worth picking up besides this one, and few of them have Final Fantasy on the title.
