In case you guys havent seen this news yet, apparently a bunch of people got a lemon of a processor recently after ordering an Intel Core i7 920 CPU processor. What's striking however is the fact that they all got it from Newegg.com which for the most part have been pretty reliable and popular online retailer. This is a real big embaressment for Newegg. Intel Corp. ordered a stop and desist on the sales of the processor when complaints started coming in and is currently investigating the issue. Roughly 300 fake chips were sold by the online retailer before they took action. Newegg has since terminated contracts with its supplier DH Distribution and quickly refunding its customers or offering advance replacements with legit chips.
Someone walked away with a wad of cash and went to some length to counterfeit these. The fake chips were packaged in seemingly convincing official retail box complete with shrink wrapping, hologram sticker logo, and serial# info etc. Even looking through the small window opening on the back of the box showed a seemingly authentic product with the Intel logo on the stock cooler fan. However when people opened it up, they were stunned to find nothing but a round plastic molding with a photo of the fan on top, a small "chip" made out of lead and a blank instruction booklet.
There are were obvious grammatical and spelling mistakes on the packaging as well.
You can read more about it here or do a search.
