Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate

Not to me. In DOA4 you would get about a decent combo worth of damage off a counter hold. Now its more like a "damn avoided that ass whopping" type of situation.

There is a ton of risk involved in them now because you can't turn the match in your favor off one correct guess. Even the ones that allow combos follow-ups don't net you a ton of damage. They just give you breathing room.

Of course there are exceptions to this rule as I mentioned before.

You don't always have to hold. Slow Escape works too.
but sometimes you do.
there are ways around slow escaping and i have made it my duty with Tina to make sure none of my stun to CB can't be slow escaped, then again Tina wants you to hold... Tina Grabing your hold does about the same damage as taking a whole combo into CB.

I think you're looking at DOA5 from too much of a SC perspective or a "traditional" 3D fighter perspective. There are still uses for TC & TJ moves, such as high-crushing and low-crushing respectively however DOA is a bit of a different animal compared to other 3D fighters. DOA is based around constant mix-up, mind games and reading your opponent instead of just plain fundamentals. With the implementation of DOA's counter hold system, this applies to both the aggressor and the defender. To discourage just mashing out attacks when you stun an opponent, the defender can defend against predictable strings with holds, forcing the mix-ups. Remember that "stuns" aren't quite the same as comboes. If you check in the Training mode Move Details, you'll notice that just the first couple hits from a string are NC's, and thus the last hit can be defended against.

On the other hand, I do find low holds to be very "iffy". I cannot describe how annoying it is to have a high attack beaten out by a low hold whiff, not to mention that it looks stupid as fuck. On the other hand, lots of mid attacks cause juicy unholdable stuns and crouch throws are essentially command throws with the unbreakable property and increased damage. I guess when you come down to it, it's all about the triangle system.
