Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate

After playing Street Fighter for a while (and having my first offline session today!), I have to say- at the basic level, at least, it reminds me a lot of Dead or Alive, in that you make hard bets all throughout the match, and things can turn ugly while being completely out of your hands.

I have to wonder why people play one over the other if it feels this similar. Is it because SF came first...?
easy. SF is a 2D fighter. that's what americans drift towards. now if this were Japan things would be different and games would be equally getting attention.

Yes and No...Tekken and Virtua Fighter get a lot of attention in Japan for 3D fighters, but really not too much else. Soul Calibur has a dedicated following but it's really not too big from my understanding. Probably DoA as well. But seriously, go to almost any arcade in Japan and you'll see the newest Tekken and Virtua Fighter and a whole slew of 2D fighters, but will rarely see any other 3D fighting games.

Really not feeling Yaiba Ninja Gaiden Z, but I have a shitty Ryu costume from it, so thats nice.

The English guy from Ninja Gaiden 3 needs to be in this game.

2D mostly. A lot of americans are incredibly biased and lazy about learning things. 3D fighters have lots of different strings, so it intimidates people.

Now as to why a person might prefer tekken over doa, it comes down to the illusion of control. In Tekken, people feel like they are winning due to physical reflexes and not guessing. In some cases thats true, but really if you just run in and start infighting with a frame advantage based character or someone with above average evasion its the exact same rock paper scissors hard-betting gameplay. It's the same for SCV, as well as VF.

Fighting games like to deceive a person into believing they are doing something more complex than RPS, but really they are just trying to hide the fact. The more well it manages to hide its nature, the more highly regarded it becomes in the eyes of the majority.

I actually have a lot of respect for DOA simply because its so blindingly honest about it.

Fuck, accidentally bought that private paradise thing thinking it was a costume back. Amazing how 12 animations of girls doing fuck all on a beach is worth the same as Metal Gear Solid V Ground Zeros.
