The American prison system really sucks. They apparently hire the most violent people they can find to be guards and decide to beat the shit out of the prisoners instead of teaching them how to be better people. Which is why so many ex-cons end up going back to prison eventually. Not to sound like a weeaboo or something, but I think Japan's system has it down. I remember watching a video of Japanese prisoners learning yoga and stuff- things to help them calm their personalities. They've got a wicked low crime rate there, so that's something they're doing right.

The problem with Japan's brand of justice is how much harder they come down on you for small offenses. Offenses here follow you around for the rest of your life, but not nearly as bad as they do in Japan.
