yes I'm familiar with the preference part. i just wasn't sure if there was a controller that have players a edge on this type of fighting game. the ps2 controller is a good idea bc I always loved playing with it on SC III . do most of the top players use controllers ? also is "clawing" a better tactic when playing ? my little thumb just can't seem to move fast enough sometimes

Yeah no real edge over other pads. Most calibur players use controllers (ps3 pad to be specific). I can only think of one player that uses claw style @ZeroEffect317. Dont think its any more effective to regular style tbh but it may help players with smaller hands...

Yeah, I started using "Claw style" in my casual days mostly for Tekken and Nina/King chain grabs. (where you had to press 3 sometimes all 4 buttons at once). But I've found it helps me to mash buttons faster than using just my thumb.
Like Menace said, other than preference, there's really no difference. And Soul Calibur isn't the hardest game in terms of execution, anyway.

Sure, the reason why I believe the PS2 controller with a good adapter maybe the peripheral of choice is because from my experience the d-pad is more accurate than PS3's and of course Xbox 360's.
Sure the PS3's layout is similar to the PS2's but to me it's d-pad felt a bit off.
