Arcade stick question

Hi everyone

I just got the Madcatz stick not too long ago. I have never used a stick before and here is something I found odd. Is the ball on top of the stick is supposed rotate freely or is it supposed to be attached to the stick?

Thanks for answering my question

It should spin but you shouldn't be able to see threads on there.

If its heinously loose, open it up, take a flathead screwdriver, hold it in the slot on the bottom of the joystick shaft (inside) then twist the head so it's tight.

On an unrelated note, if you're using a stick, give this layout a try:

A - B - K - A+B+K
G - G - () - ()

The two guard buttons are for easy JG option selects. Rake your middle finger across the second G, then slam your first finger down on the first guard button and hold.

Thanks for the input.

I opened it up and found that it was designed to freely rotate. Just to make sure, the flat head screw is directly connected to the ball right?

I tried the layout and it works out great. I have just started to practice JG and that definitely making it easier.

On a different note, I'm really having a hard time justifying using the stick cuz I started the game late at SC IV and I have always been using controllers. With the quick step feature in SC V, tapping the D-pad twice is certainly faster and more accurate than pushing the stick to me. Although I have to admit it is way more fun using the stick. What do you think? Controller or stick?

Yes, the flat head screw is connected directly.

Glad the layout works well for you. Keep practicing your JG's in training. First try JG'ing fast moves from -2 on block, then ease your way towards moves that are slower and slower. Then start over again with fast moves, but do it from a greater frame disadvantage like -6 (BB and 2A are good examples).

Repeat the process till you're JG'ing from -13 (3B). Beyond that, you're getting into moves that are very unsafe, thus JG is no longer an option. Also practice from very large frame advantage such as after 2B+K. This won't help you in a match, but getting used to *visually* watching your opponent recover, then JG'ing based on their recovery (rather than just "feel" after a particular move) will help you nail the technique.

As for Stick/Controller, I'd stay keep using the stick. It's more awkward to use at first, but there's lots of execution that becomes more difficult on a d-pad. Quarter circles, for example, can be HELL on d-pads, especially. When you get into things like making 22_88B step WITH the quickstep (via half-circle motions), you'll be glad you have the stick.
