Aracade stick

Hi, first post here.

Why do I see pros use arcade sticks in tournaments? I can't see the advantage gained by it, what are they?

Its straight up preference. A lot of pros use controllers; there is no clear advantage on using an arcade stick.

Many "pros" started competing in arcade-based tournaments; which is why they use arcade sticks at home.

PS3 generally has the better d-pad (just talking build quality). But you can make the Xbox controller work.

As said, people are used to playing with sticks, so they play with stick. For Soul Calibur there is no advantage to using an arcade stick. (Personally it may even be disadvantageous, what with all the double-tapping involved and the large throw on Sanwa joysticks...)

now, for 2D games, that's something else entirely. There are techniques on stick you can't easily replicate on pad; at the least, not holding a pad in a conventional grip, anyway.

I disagree. sanwa sticks have way shorter throws than american style joysticks. For people that have good movement with their left thumb, a controller is perfectly fine but if you are like me and have trouble getting basic movements with your thumb then a stick is ideal. I can do a quarter circle, half circle, and dragon punch motions much faster on a joystick so the throws of the joystick aren't really an issue. The biggest advantage to having a stick however to me is easy immediate access to all the buttons of the game and soulcalibur has four and has always had four. Thumb, index, middle, and ring (some people might do it different). All of the buttons at your finger tips. I know you can bind shoulder buttons and all that but then you are having to memorize even more buttons. I guess eventually you could get used to the controller and like it better than the stick.
