Do you think the same way about Neil Armstrong or Charles Lindbergh? Both of what they did was potentially suicidal at the time but they are celebrated in history for what they did. Just because you don't understand why someone does something doesn't make it stupid. Plus they had a team of scientists planning this thing for 4 years so I would have been even more surprised if they had let him go through with it and he did die.
