720 an PS4 online only discussion

fuck this. I'm stickin' with my ps3 for years to come. They tried that internet only shit with diablo 3, and it backfired because I guess they didn't realize how many people played D2 single player.

I knew there would come a day when I put video games behind me, looks like that day is coming sooner than I expected. This is probably the console generation where I quit.

Truth be told, I'm not seeing how games being exclusively digitally distributed would ever cause prices to be lowered. No game company would ever from the kindness of their heart lower prices if the used game market disappeared, they would just attempt to rake in cash from increased new game sales (should there be any). Competition causing lower prices is one of capitalism's few virtues, with the absence of competition from the used games market I hold it far more likely that game prices would be increased.

Again I would like to remind people that this is just a rumor and none of the experts (various magazines and game sites) believe that it will actually be a feature of the 720 or PS4. I'm just asking people their opinions on what a system that did this might be like to them.

I think the closest thing in the foreseeable future is maybe if Valve really does release it's Steam Box idea. The only difference there is that it probably still won't require a constant internet connection but it deals with all the other things that come with it like only new purchases (since it would probably all be digital transactions) and the complete removal of used games.

Part of the costs of games is the manufacturing of the disks and the shipping costs of sending them to stores so digital only would cut down the prices to some degree. And remember that there are many companies that are making games so if just one of them starts lowering their prices a whole lot and people flock to it then the others would have to make similar shifts or lose out on a large part of their customer base.

My question is; is the current gen tech really all that bad, and how much better will this next gen's be? The only thing i see as being a viable change is Microsoft's transition to BluRay. ...Then again.. we've yet to see what these new machines hold. Ultimately... if this Online-only function becomes a thing, i see myself switching to PC.

tl;dr- Bitching about having to drop another 4/500$, hoping its not online-only.

Three hundred and ninety-nine US dollars.
