Again - I'm not saying "You're wrong because you're wrong." What I'm trying to say is maybe you feel like these matchups aren't bad, or that every match is totally winnable on player skill. But have you ever gone and asked one of these top players in attendance whether bad matchups exist? You cite restriction of movement in 2ds as the main cause of bad matchups...
Destinizish
Destinizish
... what about characters that have bad movement? What if they have a bad backstep? What if their sidestep is slow, or worse than another character's? This isn't a universal movement system. Let's put this into more context: How does someone with poor movement do against a linear character compared to someone with great movement? etc.
Destinizish
Destinizish
I mean, you're making absolutely no argument that's relevant to competitive SC. I simply came here to say that until you've competed, until you've asked these same players how they feel about matchups in tourneys, you don't know what it's like. That's not being an elitist, that's simply the fact of the matter.
Destinizish
Destinizish
I've provided arguments - if you choose to ignore them, so be it.
Fahros
Fahros
Oh my...

You honestly think there being such a thing as a matchup in a game, automatically leads to there being distinct 'tiers' of characters?

Of COURSE there are matchups, and of COURSE people can struggle with certain moves as a a *player* with a given character, and of COURSE they could personally have easier times with other characters...
Fahros
Fahros
My question is, why in the HELL do you think those personal experiences of top players equate to defining 'tiers' of characters? Is THAT a joke?
Destinizish
Destinizish
You do realize how tier lists are made, and what they're meant to show... right?

The SCIV french tier list was made entirely based off of matchup charts. The NA tier list was pretty much the same thing except with Algol thrown up top for some reason.
Fahros
Fahros
Soul Calibur isn't a linear game. You're still being VERY vague. 'Nightmare can zone characters, and Viola has punishable moves'. LOL?
Fahros
Fahros
Every character in the game takes risks, and is punishable. And any specific tool has a WAY AROUND IT, is the point. You're not going to find a matchup in SC that's set in stone bad for one character or another, because any singular tool that could possible make a matchup bad can be figured out and adjusted to in this game.
Fahros
Fahros
And you do realize that given that, the idea of a tier list is completely irrelevant...right?
Destinizish
Destinizish
What is your definition of "idea of a tier list," then? Because you seem to be arguing something completely the opposite.

And no - some people actually don't have an answer to a lot of Viola's pressure. There are select characters that she literally FORCES 50/50s on where she can't on some others.
Fahros
Fahros
A tier list doesn't fit with Soul Calibur, that's what I'm arguing.

People don't have answers to Viola's pressure? Now that you've actually come out on a limb and claimed something ignorant, I can show you how you're wrong. Tell me what characters you think can't deal with what pressure, and I'll show you how ignorant you are on this matter.
Fahros
Fahros
I want specifics.

It's time for you to level up.
Destinizish
Destinizish
Easy example - Astaroth can space Viola out, but if she backsteps out of even his range, she forces a guess on what she'll do with the orb.

Aeon - his safety leads him into her 6B+K setups all day - his only answer is 66K, and she can easily avoid this whilst still forcing the 50/50 guess if he doesn't do it.
Fahros
Fahros
"If he doesn't do it..."

How the hell does an IF equate to a tangible gap in effectiveness or one character or another?

If a character has an answer for something, he has an answer for something. It's not the character being bad if the PLAYER doesn't do it. Holy shit, thank you for making my point all too clear.
Destinizish
Destinizish
I don't think you read that right. He has an answer to 6B+K pressure if the Viola goes right along into something else. Like a 6B, etc. If she doesn't do that, because she realizes he has this tool, she can freely avoid it, whilst still having time to take advantage of the 50/50 setup. Thus it's forced. He either eats a 50/50, or ends up in a 50/50.
Fahros
Fahros
And what happens if he blocks the 50/50, in this jaw-dropping tier defining scenario?
Destinizish
Destinizish
... Then nothing happens. But it's not a reactable 50/50 and if you guess wrong leads to Viola's advantage, or 100+ damage. If she has 2 meter - 200 damage. If she has 4 meter - 240 damage ToD combo.
Fahros
Fahros
I'll tell you what happens, a mindgame happens.

If the Aeon get the interrupt, it's a momentum shift, and he has the opportunity to start his own game play.

If the Aeon blocks correctly, it's the same situation.

Not to mention, the Aeon could GI or JG the string for potentially decent damage of his own.

What you've said is nothing tier defining, simply one of many things that have to be dealt with.
Fahros
Fahros
A players ability, or inability to handle situations, does NOT equate to one character being better or worse than another.
