Learning the guitar thread!!!

Hey, guys. I've been working on a few songs for an audition I'm going to be going to on the 11th of May.
For this audition, I'm to demonstrate scales (four # to four b's); and play two differentiating classical guitar pieces. I've decided to play "Bourre" by J.S. Bach because it's sort of a "look what I can do!", and a guitar arrangement for "Moonlight Sonata" by Beethoven because its pretty much in Adiago tempo (really really slow).

SO! Because its so hard to get started with this stuff though I've been playing guitar for a few years now, I thought I'd share my life lesson with you so that my mistakes may not be repeated.

-LEARN. SHEET. MUSIC.

Why do I say this? It's hard. TOUGH. BRUTAL. and I've been set back to playing "Mary had a little Lamb".

The problem is that the learning curve takes a while to adjust to, and when you don't at least exercise a skill like Sight reading, you're going to have to come back to it in the long run. (unless you want to NOT make money, or be a successful musician outside of a band that may or may not be marketable.)

Learn from my mistake! Start early!

Paul I has a question! Is it better to use your fingers or is it better to use a pick? Also, why learn how to read music when i can just look up tabs?

(note: I can play guitar and read music but these a questions that beginners would ask)

Good questions, Jeuce.

It really depends on what style you're going for concerning finger picking.

And I'll phrase it this way concerning sheet music vs. tablature:
learning tabs over sheet music is like learning SC with SCIV lag; it might seem like you're doing well, but in the long run you'll have missed alot of benefits that you'd get doing it the right way.

After awhile, it will become a crutch. You'll become dependent on numbers on a peice of paper with no real knowledge as to what you're doing.

Tab has its uses mainly as an educational tool; but to be a decent musician or if your goal is a higher level of play, you'll have to get used to the sheet music.

I hope that makes sense.
