todays music sucks

James LaBrie's voice is excellent. He has great talent. His lyrical writing abilities are awful (they may have gotten better, I haven't paid much attention recently). Good thing the drummer writes most of the lyrics.

Wait what songs lyrics did LaBrie even write? I thought up until recently Portnoy and Myung wrote everything. Sorry for getting off topic.

It seems like those of us who like the older stuff are more or less screwed. Sometimes I wish older bands would get back in the game but that usually isn't pretty when it happens. Some of em can come kinda close, I can only imagine how much more epic this would be if John would get over it and hire a second guitarist again-

I'm not a fan of shred-style solos because I believe them to be unmemorable and uninspired. It has to be special circumstances, and they have to be buried in a particularly good song for them to work for me. Unfortunately, this overwrites most power metal for me, as the entire point of that genre is to play as fast as possible all the time. Usually at some point during a power metal band's second album their solos turn to garbage because they run out of ideas, and their fans expect every song to have a solo.
this makes me think of slipknot's solos. It sounds like a bunch of random notes put together and that they would have a hard time playing it again because they don't know what they played in the first place. I don't really listen to power metal because it didn't have an impact on me. Now it seems that twin lead guitar playing catches my attention as long as it's done well. (and no I'm not talking about A7X either but they do have some memorial twin guitar solos).
around 2:50 is a nice twin and solo guitar part but the whole band is good. also that guitarist on the right is considered one of the best in the world. No joke.

I do think it is a shame that when people think Power Metal they think DragonForce and not Helloween or Gamma Ray. Anyway if you want good songwriting from the genre I recommend Angra due to Raphael Bittencourt being a musical genius. He can write quality power metal and he can write quality progressive metal. Angra isn't based on gimmicks just a bunch of quality musicians making quality music.
