I've been Soul Calibured

Hi there,
I'm kinda new here and have been coming here to check out all the latest SC5 news since this seems to be the place to get the latest scoop. So yeah that's when I started coming here regularly, but I've seen how cool this community is so I thought what better then to join and be a part of it.

As for my Soul Calibur history.
Well surprisingly enough Soul Calibur 4 is the first Soul Calibur game I've ever played. Even more surprising is the reason. Star Wars Characters. Yep that's it. Never would have even cared if it hadn't been for that.
Though honestly, I really don't play any of them.
But instead I've come to love playing characters like: Siegfried, Sophitia, Ivy, Cassandra,Amy,Tira, and others.
I only rented it when it first came out and was more of a button masher without any training.
But last year a friend of mine bought me SC4 for my B-Day and not too long after that I was on Live playing against people of all levels and learning from experience and training.
I'm not a super serious gamer, but I do like to win.
Oh yeah, I hate spam, ringouts, and grabs.

Other then that SC is my fav fighting game series.
Can't wait till SC5! : )

First welcome. We cater to a lot of player levels and will help you learn "to win". The best players will always tell you that the best way to learn is good offline (tho online can be good practice, it simply cannot be played at high level). We have character specific forums that are modded by expert level players so check those out.

You will need to learn that spam, ROs, and grabs are an integral part of the game and fully valid and fully beatable. Sometimes the solutions to these are not obvious to new players, but there are MANY counter measures. Visit my signature links for some tips.Look into frame data if you want to learn advanced things like punishing and advantage/disadvantage. Our stickies have a lot of core mechanic info that may be useful such as step vs 8wayrun.

How far are you planning on taking this game and how good do you want to be? We have lots of people that will play you on xboxLive. Good luck and can't wait for SC5 myself.

Hi there AJV, I am one of the moderators of this forum and I am here to help make sure you find your place in our community. If you have any questions or concerns don't hesitate to ask me in a PM or post here.

With that out of the way, I just want to tell you that you've come to the right place! 8WayRun.com is the best place to come for SoulCalibur information.

I think it's great that the Star Wars characters are what initially brought you to get the game. Were you into any fighting games before SoulCalibur?

While you are here waiting for the latest SC5 info to get posted you should take some time to become familiar with the notations and acronyms if you aren't already. To help with this, one of our valued members created this to help
8WR General Directory and Offline Matchfinder Reception

This will get you up to speed on how to browse these forums with great efficiency. If you have any questions regarding this information don't hesitate to ask!

Once you get familiar with that stuff you should also take some time and check out your favorite characters SoulArena's. You'll learn alot of stuff about them there and you'll be winning with consistency in no time. I've taken the liberty of linking you to the ones you listed here:
Siegfried, Sophitia, Ivy, Cassandra, Amy, Tira.

With all the characters you play, you should never get bored around here!

And like IvyFanBoy said, ring outs, spam, and throws are something you're going to run into alot of. It's all a part of the competitive spirit we all have. Win by any means. This is very difficult to deal with online as there is alot of latency in your moves and reactions. Guard Impacting, and throw breaking sometimes get lost in this translation of the game. One thing to keep in mind about playing online is, it isn't serious. You can read more about how online affects your true ability, read this post here:

Online Play Facts and Basics

Online just a bonus mode to the game. Online matches in this community are nothing but a good time. If you are getting beat by someone consistently online, this doesn't mean that the same thing would happen if you play them offline so take it for what it's worth. The two play very differently, so keep that in mind the next time someone is spamming you. There's no need to take online seriously. You can meet some fun people online in our community to play with and learn from here:

Online Mode

It's like a seperate community in itself!

Playing offline at tournaments is the way to go if you want to be a serious player and prove that you are good. Offline is the way SC4 was intended to be played. You remove all of the variables that come with playing online so it's just you versus your opponent. Skill vs Skill. You'll also meet alot of really nice people that will help you improve or just hang out with. Offline tournaments are the core reason this community and any fighting game community exsist. You might even have a local community where you live. Check here for that:

Regional Matchmaking
If you don't see a thread for your state feel free to make one! You never know, there might be some neighbors posting here as well!

Anywho, I think I have rambled on enough, but like I said, don't hesitate to ask any questions. I'm here to help.

Hi There and Thank you all for the warm welcomes. -^^-

Yeah I was somewhat surprised about the differences between off & on-line play, since I play mostly online and I don't play much offline since I don't really know anyone locally (besides my little cousin who just got SC4). But I noticed I was able to pull of Just like Setsuka's 1BB fairly often offline in training

I guess hate was a little bit too strong of a word..^^; It's just I don't like them much. I may grab if it can lead into a combo or something like that. As for being grabbed, I've kinda gotten used to shaking, ducking, and interrupting grabs. You wouldn't believe how many time's I've shaken out of Ivy's special grabs or just ducked them.
As for Ringouts, I just don't believe in doing it. If I ring someone out, it's usually an accident. Though if the person that gets rungout and has little heath then I don't think it's cheap. But if that's all someone tries to do, then yeah I find it cheap.
As for Spam. No thanks. I don't like that kinda food.

I play pretty much for fun, but I think going tournament level could be fun too.
Yeah, I'd love to play with ya all on Xboxlive sometime. Who knows, we might have played each other before. ;D

Oh yeah, thanks for the tips too. :)

Well why Thank You for all the helpful links and tips, and if I need something I'll let ya know. ^^

Yeah thanks to my (former) Star Wars fanboyism I stumbled upon what I think is like my favorite fighting game series.
Before SC4 I used to play a lot of the Super Smash Bros. series of games (like Melee and Brawl) with my main being Zelda/Sheik. I actually played in a tournament once when they first released Brawl, but I didn't make past the first match. ^^;
As for Grabs,Ringouts, and Spam, I just don't like them that much..hate might've been a bit too strong.
I pretty much play for fun anyway. Though that's why I don't play a whole lotta of ranked matches since people will spam you to death or use major lag to their advantage and your disadvantage.
Though I have been asked to participate in tournaments online but I've turned them down because I wouldn't want to fight someone in a online setting where lag (like major lag) could come up at any time.

I am hopeful that I might find some people in my area to play some offline matches with. There'll probably be even more SC players once SC5 comes out.

Anyway thanks a bunch for the helpful info. :)

Pocky Yoshi says hello. Pleased to meet you. You're in good hands, AJV.
Well hello there. Nice to meet you too. What a tasty name you have...I mean...thanks! ^^
