So...what techniques from Soul Calibur as well as other games should you have down solid so that your overall skill as a gamer can improve? This doesnt just have to be fighters. It could be FPS's or games like Rock Band/Guitar Hero.

Spacing. In every competitive game you need to control whatever you're controlling in such a specific way that you have the advantage. You gotta use whatever tiny differences in your opponent's situation and yours to your advantage. In any game that has varying range of attacks or whatever, you need to exploit those ranges down to the last pixel. Attack where your opponent cannot.

Mindgames/Deception. You need to trick your opponent into doing something for which you have a ready counter action. Make your opponent think you're doing something and do something different. Be spontaneous. In just about every game, your future choices are in the dark. Those choices need to be unpredictable yet still effective. Deceive your opponent with past actions to make your next action seem unlikely.

Valuation. You must choose the choices that are correct at the right moment at the right time. You must forgo any worse choices for "mindgames" and use the best option when it is guaranteed. It's okay to be predictable/repetitive if it is working. Know WHY some choices are better than others in each game you play and remove bad habits from your game. Don't use bad moves, don't do things that DON'T WORK.

Situational Awareness. Understand each situation you are in and make the right choice based ALL of your surroundings. Know that your opponent is attempting to make sense of what you are doing next. This should give you an idea on what you should do next. Use past information in any given game/round/match, your present situation, and possible futures to make the best choice.

Knowing your opponent. If you want to enjoy your gameplay experience, you need to play with a similar mindset as your opponent. If your opponent is not taking the game seriously, you shouldn't either. If your opponent is playing to learn, like trying new tactics or something, try your own ideas. If your opponent is behind on the metagame, and uses old tactics that may beat new tactics, just use the tactics that counter their outdated ones and show them why the metagame has transgressed them. You don't want to be playing like you're in a tournament facing formidable opponents when your actual opponent is just mashing buttons and making irrational decisions that are unpredictable enough to work.

I have a semi-joke one:
Don't be afraid to look on the Internet for the answer. There's other people that are playing your game. They might be able to give you some tips and things.

Make sure that you're still having fun when you're playing your game. If you're not having fun, go do something else. Going outside might be a nice change of pace.

Signia threw out the "I read Sirlin/play a lot of fighting games" ones. Would you like the obvious as well?

Practice makes perfect, for every game. Play it more, get better at it.

Know what you're trying to do. It's an important one that is an overarching goal that Signia's are all parts of. Make sure you have a plan, and also make sure you can change it if you have to. I'll steal a Sirlin quote that probably isn't completely his: "Don't be a one-trick pony, unless you are a terrifying one-trick pony of death." Or, in SC4's case, don't be a one-trick pony, unless you're playing Hilde. =P

Specific to certain genres of games...
--FPS: Learn the god damned maps. Learn people's most common habits, and the best way to counter them.
--Fighting games: see Signia's post.
--Music games: Be able to keep a beat. If you can't do this yet, learn! Otherwise, I'd strongly suggest trying something else...
--Pinball: There's the tilt for a reason!
--H Games: Learn to play with one hand, wait what...?
--Chess: Read books! Lots of them!
--Pokemon: Catch em all!

1. Find something you're good at OR something you really desire to be good at.
2. Care about improving. Focus on getting better at it.
3. Practice. Practice. Practice. (depending on the game, numberous things to practice)
4. Observe others and see how they play the same game/character.(even if you feel you are better, watch to learn.)
5. Seek knowledge and Experiance through playing with others (clans, groups, gatherings, etc...)
6. Take criticism. From the complements, to kind words, to harsh, to haterade. Take it all in, make heads and tails of it for next time
7. Strive for improvement, NEVER settle for being "good", become "amazing".
8. Refresh your basics whenever you start to slip up.(Alot of times the best solution is often the simplist)
9. Don't panic, the moment you start to panic may be the one moment that leaves you/your team wide open. Stay calm.
10. Enjoy yourself, remember. It's all about the game, and how you play it.
