If you want to get that technical, Sonic is already a were-hog considering he's anthropomorphic. Him turning into a "werehog" is just him growing hair and nails.

If he starts as a werehog he doesn't transform into a werehog. That just doesn't make sense as long as we are using common English.

Sega was clearly not implying that Sonic is turning more man-like either, since humans have long lost excessive body hair and claws (there are probably a few still in the gene pool, but they are statistically insignificant). I am quite sure that Sega did not actually care what werehog means as long as it sounds like some well known monster that involves transformation.

They already tried that with Sonic the Hedgehog for PS3 and 360 and failed. Not to mention Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 weren't the end all be all Sonic games by any means. While they were decent, there were still loads of glitches and bugs that surfaced (just like the other 3D Sonic games). Thankfully, they weren't as severe as they are now.

EDIT: About another sonic adventure 3. I've never completely played through the game (sonic adventure 1/2) since I never had a gamecube/wii (yet) but I do know that people say that was what they tried to do for sonic 06, like shinobi said. Glicthy as much as it was broken, unleashed is a pretty good step up compared to that garbage...even though I liked said garbage.
