Square or Octal gate?

Ok I got my Soul Edition Madcatz stick and the first thing I did was swap out the square gate for an octagonal one. But for some reason I seem to be having a hard time getting the right directions pressed when trying to do more precise movements. When playing SCIV I had a cheap $50 stick with a square gate and always played with that, by the time I learned how to change out parts and customize things I had moved on to Mortal Kombat and for that game I greatly enjoyed the octal over the square. Now that I'm playing SC again it just feels off.

What I'm thinking is that maybe different shaped gates work better for different style games. Does anyone else have a preferrence on gates when playing this game with a stick?

I've always used an octal gate myself, although epsecially for 2D fighters I find myself wanting a square sometimes. =(

Games where you're sliding along the edges IMO favor square gates, also maybe charge moves would be better on them...? I always use the octo-gate though. Since I constantly return to neutral position all the time, I find it benefits me more to push in a direction and actually find the corner that it's in.

One tip my friend had when switching to an octo gate was constantly returning the stick to neutral. That way every input has a dedicated "corner" for it to easily go into, instead of that fuzzy area between the corner and the flat edge.

You could also screw with your brain and add the JLF round restrictor plate! YEAH
