Seems as though in this day and age, if the Sonic game is not on the DS, there is going to be a big issue somewhere in the game (it's going to suck one way or another).
The top Sonic games of this gen have only been on DS.
Sonic Rush, Sonic Rush Adventure, and Sonic Chronicles (those who whine about the concept of a Sonic RPG should keep their mouths shut if they even remotely enjoyed those Mario RPGs).
Sonic the Hedgehog (Next Gen) was a complete failure and Sega failed to fulfill more than half of the promises they made with that game when they announced it for the very first time many years back.
Sonic and the Secret Ring, Sonic Unleashed, and Sonic and the Black Knight were decent concepts that were executed in a very poor manner (which actually applies to just about every 3D game in the franchise, with the exception of Shadow the Hedgehog because the very concept was fucking retarded.)
Sonic team constantly short change themselves. They develop decent concepts and then fall flat face first on the execution IE the development of the actual game. Out of all the most recent home console Sonic games, Unleashed was the closest to greatness (though it still didn't achieve it). The Werehog stages killed the game.
Now, I'm not hating on the Werehog concept because I don't hate it. The concept was fine. It's just that the Werehog stages played like a half assed kiddy version of God of War. The main problem being that those stages were half assed.
Those that do whine about the werehog concept - If you want to call bullshit on a hedgehog changing into a werehog, then I'm going to call bullshit on a hedgehog being blue and running at the speed of sound. I'm also going to call bullshit on a elf suddenly being able to turn into a wolf. I'm also going to call bullshit on a plumber who never does his damn job and can breath in fucking space. Bottom line, all those concepts can EASILY be called retarded yet some are successful (because of the execution, NOT the base concept) so it's a waste of time to whine about something so dumb.
tl;dr verison:
DS Sonic Games = Win
Recent Home Console Sonic Games = Fail
Sonic Unleased = close but no cigar.
