I've been wanting to upgrade my PS3 harddrive for a while now. I was wondering, what items will I need and what steps should I take to do so (to include copying all of my data and whatnot).

Keep in mind that you can't backup copy protected saves onto a flash drive. They can only be backed up through an entire harddrive backup which will copy over everything (music, videos, games, etc) on the hdd.

Or get a Playstation Plus account and copy your copy protected save files on there. :p Only thing is that, you can copy as many files as you want to PS+; however, to copy them back to a console, you can only copy 1 copy protected save back to the console every 24 hours. No other issues with regular saves thou. :p

P.S. Don't know if it says it in the videos; however, the max hard drive you can go up to is 500 GB with 5400 rpms. Any higher may present problems to the system as stated by Sony.

Items you need:
  1. Any 2.5 inch (laptop size) SATA (SATA 1, 2 & 3) hard drive running at 5400RPM/7200RPM but it's best to get SATA 1 since the PS3 doesn't take advantage of the other two.
    • Do take note that there are some sites that says 7200RPM may cause compatibility issues, but it may depend on how new/old the model is manufactured. I have a fat PS3 newer than the first batch of fat PS3 models (the ones that have 4 USB ports; mine has 2) and it runs well so far on my hard drive @ 7200 RPM.
  2. To back up your stuff use any USB storage device via Flash Drive, External hard drive depending on how much space needed to back-up.
Steps to Take:
  1. Format your USB storage device as FAT 32.
  2. Download the latest PS3 firmware to your USB storage device following only the Update data download procedure.
  3. Plug your USB storage device to your PS3 and backup your PS3 data by going to Settings -> System Settings -> Backup Utility -> Backup -> select your device.
  4. Check the model # of your PS3 you can find it at the bottom of your box package or at the rear of your PS3 right after dash of the serial #. For example, my model # is CECHH01
  5. Consult with this site on how to remove the old hard drive and install the new hard drive.
  6. After installing your Hard Drive if your PS3 fails to read it, access the recovery/safe menu; this will tell you how to access it.
    • In the safe menu (if I can recall) I choose Restore PS3 system (#5), be sure that your USB storage device is still plugged into your PS3 since it requires the latest firmware.
  7. If not, then just follow the on-screen instructions.
  8. Restore your data from USB storage device by going to Settings -> System Settings -> Backup Utility -> Restore -> select your device.
Now onto other matters not like it totally matters...

I have a Seagate hard drive @ 750GB capacity running @ 7200RPM installed on my PS3; I had it for +2months now w/o any problems.
