Couple of arcade stick questions

Just ordered a custom stick from arcade-in-a-box and i had a few questions for all you seasoned veterans out there.

First, what's the learning curve like? By that I mean how long did it take you to get comfortable enough to execute most commands on the fly. I have some experience back from when Soul Cal II and Mortal Kombat were in arcades, but I'd hardly call myself a pro.

Secondly, how do you hold your joystick? The most comfortable method I've found is to rest the side of my middle finger underneath the ball of the joystick and use my thumb and index finger to hold the top. The problem with this method is that it's hard to quickly tap :4::4: and :6::6:. I also have a hard time hitting the :1: direction at all. Any tips?

Lastly, what's a good button layout for this game. Right now I have my buttons laid out like this:

:A: :B: :K:

:G: [ ] [ ]

I'm thinking I should map something to the other two positions. Any advice?

I have sort of "wet my feet" in the transfering over to stick area and I say watch this first.

I say your mapping is cool for now. As soon as you get used to the stick as in pressing block and the directions you have to block, then you can go to mapping to your comfort zone.

I would use the others for some type of jf attack(yoshi's a:bk) and for the CF button.

This is my opinion. =0) good luck.

That mapping is the standard. If you have an 8 button lay out I suggest:

A : B : K : A+B+K:G
G : - : - : -

In those dashes i have 2 set ups: B+K : A+K: A+B+K (standard for me) and A : G : A (slide input NM/seig...these can be modded to any buttons but are specifically designed to get 3 button JF slides). With the slides set up you literally smack the board sideways as you swipe it for an easy JF.

I cradle the ball stick with thumb and index on top of the ball, middle on side, ring is on the side of the sticks shaft facing me ( so nail outward and facing stick shaft), and pinky actually doesn't touch but supports the ring finger...however i frequently shift my ring finger to the other side of the stick for certain motions and then naturally return it to the other side (mainly double taps).

It took me about 2 months to fully appreciate my stick. When I first got it I was not good and I was worried I made a mistake and should just stick with pad. Now my stick I'm vastly superior on my arcade stick. It takes a lot of practice, but it well worth the payoff.

Yeah that was the same set of worries I was having, but I guess I just need to stick with it. By the way B-boy, thanks for the link. I remember "the wineglass" from back in the arcade but lately I've adopted kind of a variation of "the eagle" grip. I'm gonna experiment with those others though. I'm having a hard time envisioning IvyFanboy's grip from the description given, but in any case I've got some practicing to do now. Thanks for the replies guys.
