Even if I do consider the audience as a 'layperson' the amount of info they saw will be overwhelming. You can try to be more concise by giving out objectives of this article in point form. Label your points as subtopics and elaborate on them.

I think the major problem with your article its that its way too lengthy. You need to trim down the unnecessary paragraphs, divide into more sub topics and make the reader experience something different when they read them.
