Hate Speech: Of Clean Hits, Designs, and Time Travel

If anything, the worry over clean hit shouldn't be about whether it dictates how a character should be played, but that it might not do a good enough job of it. Ideally, fighting games should have training mode features that outright tell players why a move is good and informs them about...

Hate Speech: Of Clean Hits, Designs, and Time Travel

*its oh, and cool column brah Command throw supers with fast start-up punishing "safe" moves is far from unheard of, and there will probably be ways around it that may take some time to discover. If I may hazard an early guess, I think moves with crouch properties could be a potential...

    Hate Speech: A Seasonal Feast

The biggest factor is that most people who today claim it was the best entry in the series weren't even around when the game was in its heyday. Many very good players didn't even like SC2 all that much, judging from how much they ranted about, well, a lot of the stuff Hates listed here. Even...

SCV Interview With Daishi Odashima At NEC XII

Good on Bibulus for asking tough questions and not just lobbing softballs like so many other interviewers. I like their take on character balancing. It's good to know that they see improving weaker characters, and not necessarily nerfing stronger ones, as the key principle.

    Hate Speech: A Seasonal Feast

Yep. It's interesting because VF also arguably has stronger defensive options than SC, but it seldom devolves into a roach-fest. Everything is designed to reward smart reads, and for the most part it works rather beautifully. This seems to be a guiding principle in SC5 so far, which I'm glad to see.

    Hate Speech: A Seasonal Feast

Am I the only one who thinks Maxi's 33B wasn't all that great in SC2? It was crazy steppable, and only really had useful applications after a soul charge, which was often a way of telegraphing a 33B. That aside, I pretty much agree with this. I did like SC2, but I used to bitch a lot about...

    Hate Speech: Character Selection

I'd love to delve into how I choose my main characters, but as you well know, it's very hard to explain.

If you had to pick an age to be for the rest of your life, what would it be? Why?

Women wearing makeup: How do you feel about it?

If she has to wear makeup, I prefer it to be light. Women often wear makeup not so much to cover up their flaws as to enhance their what they feel are their stronger features, and I can live with that. That said, I think the obsession we have with trying to look attractive to the opposite sex is...

    todays music sucks

Akino Arai and Susumu Hirasawa are two of my all-time favorite musicians. But it needs to be said that the stuff they do for anime, while good, hardly compares to their other work. Also check out Hirasawa's old band, P-Model. They were a big influence on the Japanese new wave and techno pop...

    todays music sucks

I can't even figure out when indie became a genre, really. Near as I can tell, it was once just a term for post-punk bands that weren't signed to major labels. I'm not sure I can say rock has "grown by leaps and bounds" in recent years, but certainly there's been a lot of movement and...

    todays music sucks

I probably know more about music than 95% of you, if for no other reason than just being older than most here, and "today's music" has sucked ever since I was a teenager like the OP. "Today's music" is just another term for whatever is the most accessible (i.e., mainstream) at the time, and like...

    Favorite guitar Players

Some really good ones here, especially Kiko, Satch, Lifeson and Petrucci. The best ever, though, is Allan Holdsworth. The runs 1:21 and 2:23 in particular are fantastic:

R.I.P. Cliff Burton. He died in Sweden while on tour with Metallica 25 years ago today. This song has several of his finest moments.

    Hate Speech: Extra Extra Credits

I don't think games necessarily have to sacrifice depth in order to be more spectator-friendly. In fact, I think this is one area in which fighting games have an inherent advantage over RTSes, FPSes and all those garbage DotA clones. For starters, all the action is contained on a single screen...

Hate Speech: On the Subject of Change

Another solid piece, Hates. Personally, I don't mind the changes to GI all that much. I would prefer if there were at least two commands a la SC2, but that's only because I like to have more options. What I am a little wary of is the possibility that the risk/reward might be good enough to...

    Hate Speech: A Formal Introduction

I think the ideal state that Hates describes can be likened somewhat to musicians who are exceptionally good at improvisation. They are constantly adapting on the fly to chord and rhythm changes in songs, and oftentimes those changes are unannounced or not very obvious. Reaching that level...

    Hate Speech: A Formal Introduction

Anyway, nice piece. It reminds me of a great quote that supposedly originated at IBM several decades ago: "Information overload equals pattern recognition." To me, that means those who do something enough and with the right amount of awareness will familiarize themselves with more situations...
