Might be how you're approaching the match mentally. With close range you have to gear yourself to think 3-4 moves ahead. It's not what you're doing right at the moment that matters, it's what you're setting up.
How are you with frame data? I think close-range sparring can often come down to frame knowledge. Longer range characters rely more on spacing and talent imo. (I play short range btw)
I'm not terrible with frames, but I'm no expert either. I know most of the frames for my characters, but not all. I think the reason I favor long range is because It seems like spacing is my main strength as a player. When I tried to play Pat, I did more whiffing than anything else. Could it be that I'm too conditioned for range?
