Contra:SS is not the hardest Contra yet. It was loleasy. Hard Corps was way harder.

Hard Corps is insane, but C:SS has Rank system that forces you to play flawlessly throughout the whole game in order to get to the last two secrete stages. C:HC is my favorite Contra, but it is ok if I lose one life-stock (rest), the other thing is that C:SS is more pro-balance in gameplay-wise because you have all weapons to chose from during combat, is more practical 24/7, more like Ikaruga instead of Gradius5. In Ikaruga you and your enemies are equally powerful, making the game Skill-dependant rather than PowerUp-dependant like Gradius5 which has many situation where if you do not have the ship powered up (Speed-up), you simply wont make it regarles of your skills.
