Speaking from personal experience, this actually sounds pretty bad. He behaves in the exact same way I did when I got bored in my last relationship (yea, I'm evil). I just didn't know how to talk to him so I thought if I ignore him a bit, he will eventually figure out something is wrong. I hope it's not the same for you.
 
It's clearly related to his Dad being around. Is he out to his Dad or not? Regardless, seems there's some issue there and, for the time being, you're gonna need to let him work out whatever he's going through. I'm sure he knows you're there for him, but see how things go when his Dad leaves. Might be he'll explain then.
