Hi,

Just thought I'd say 'hello', after recently joining this forum.

Haven't really played a Soulcalibur game since the second one on Dreamcast - in fact I didn't really play any post-Dreamcast fighting game. Like lots of others, though, 'Street Fighter IV' brought me back out of the woodwork.

Love 'Street Fighter IV', in all it's incarnations (I'm a Rose player), but never got my head around 'Marvel vs Capcom 3' (never liked a Vs game much, TBH, apart from 'Capcom vs SNK') and, following the huge disappointment that is 'Street Fighter x Tekken' (and watching Maximilian's 'Online Warrior' series) I've been very tempted to trade SFxTK in for SCV.

Picked up SCIV for a few quid today and have been having great fun mashing buttons against the computer. Took it online for a few games, however, and found nothing but Darth Vader players swinging their swords up and down constantly. Is that what it's always like? Is that what SC5 is like online?

So, any tips for someone who hasn't played since '99? Any suggestions who to take for a spin (as I say, I play Rose in SFIV. I'm not that good, but I don't think I'm terrible - I've won games at tournaments, built up double-digit win-streaks at local casuals, and the like. I'm okay. Ish. :))?

In fact, as someone who isn't at all keen on how rushdown-heavy and combo-oriented most fighting games are nowadays, should I even bother with SC5? Is blocking a thing that people actually do in this game? ;)

Cheers for reading!

I will try to answer your questions, but keep in mind I am not a person who frequents tournaments.

Regarding online... you have to understand 2 things. 1) In general, playstyles vary online. For Soul Calibur specifically, Ranked Matches are generally full of idiots, and Player Matches will get you a better chance of playing opponents who are knowledgeable. 2) For SC4 specifically, Vader is an amazing character, and the fact he is not in SC5 is sad.

Regarding how "most fighting games are nowadays", SC5 is probably less "rushdown". The speed at which Marvel players execute combos both confuses and infuriates me. SC5 is "slower", and defense is certainly a major aspect of the game, especially on wakeup. Teching, guarding, rolling... there are specifics for every action you take.

As far as who you'd play? I cannot say, I did not play SF4 much. In the SF series in general I prefer Guile, but I cannot equate a Soul Calibur character to a Street Fighter character. My best advice is to try out the game using a friend's console/disc and decide from there. The game is pretty balanced (in my opinion), so you don't have to worry about "tiers" too much.

Thanks very much for the reply. I've been enjoying mashing about on SCIV a lot so, come payday, I'll be treating myself to Soulcalibur V - particularly given your comments about the nature of the game (hey, at my age the reactions are halfway out the door!).

As to who to play as - I notice SCV has a fortune-teller who fights with orbs of energy... Interesting...

Thanks again!

PS - Online idiocy isn't a problem restricted to Soulcalibur - I think the thing that surprised me about Vader was that I saw him even more often than Ken in SFIV... :)

Heya

Rose is all about awesome normals in SF4, and one or two strong links that became bread and butter.

If you're willing to learn the moves and when to use them, I would suggest Mitsurugi or Nightmare. Both use ranged normals to excellent efficiency, without massive situational combo knowledge necessary (relatively).

Honestly, if you wanted to challenge yourself slightly more, you could play Cervantes. Same basic premise but more comboing.

Moving on, this game adds an entire defensive and offensive dimension to fighting games over 2D. It's a hell of a lot more mobile than Tekken or Virtua Fighter, and nothing else really compares anymore. However, I think that if you can learn to win with Rose, you have a gamer's ability to anticipate and stuff opponent's attacks.

If you can do that in this game, you will win with anyone. Very often.
