surely you haven't heard all the new music either.
but seriously how many people actually study music though? just by listening to some songs you can get a wider appreciation for music in general, example being if a sample is used, knowing where the sample is from and how it's used to form the new song, gives you appreciation on the producer's talent as well as widen your knowledge on music in general. studying the tempo, rhythm. watching live music and seeing how they perform on stage, studying their stage presence, just gives you a wider understanding and more credence when you actually talk about music amongst your peers.
on the topic of actual instruments vs synthesized... call me old fashioned but nothing beats a live instrument. If you ever go to a live band concert it just feels more alive compared to a synthesized track.
i mean granted you can make awesome music with anything. STOMP is a testament to that. still, I would give it to live instruments.
