Final Fantasy XIII

No FFX-2 hides itself in that mode, just because you can go places not important doesn't mean it isn't forcing you follow a line. Otherwise every game with a world map would still fall into it linearity.

Using that logic, every Final Fantasy game is linear.

Especially Final Fantasy 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9. They force you to follow a line and the story.

The reviewers are just picking at things looking for faults which is a shame cuz im sure the game will be just fine once you get going.

Wouldn't you say, though, that allowing you to pick what mission to take in the order you choose is non-linear? You are still driven to a point, but how you proceed to that point is not forced upon you.

This would mean that segments in FF4 and FF6 are non-linear, as you can choose to pick up Leviathan, take on the Sylph Cavern, pick up Bahamut, choose not to get the ultimate weapons in the final dungeon, decide the order in which characters you pick up in the World of Ruin and which optional dungeons to take on.
